Creating a New Group

Groups are an excellent way to represent large organizational or project structures and to manage project participants, as a main group can include multiple subgroups and projects. Large topics can be hierarchically structured using so-called Epics. With Epics, a roadmap view similar to a Gantt chart is possible. Within each main or subgroup, you can create multiple projects and assign responsible individuals.

Note: In GIT.NRW, top-level groups cannot be created independently.
Please refer to the git.nrw Wiki https://git.nrw/de/support/ for further assistance. As the owner of a top-level group, you will then be able to create subgroups with all associated features and invite members. As the owner of a main group, you can then independently create subgroups with all associated features and invite members.

Once you have your own group, you can create your own group structure by clicking either “(1) New Subgroup” or “(2) Create Subgroup”. Both options trigger the same process.

The numbers 1 and 2 indicate where to click to create a group.

At this point, you can assign the “(1) name of the subgroup”, set the “(2) visibility level”, or “(3) import an existing group” from another area in GitLab.

The process is usually completed by assigning a group name and clicking the “Create Subgroup” button.

The numbers 1 to 3 highlight the described functions.
