Overview

Value: FLEX is a research framework developed at RWTH Aachen for electronic examinations on students' own devices.

Problem: Examinations on personal devices need reliable storage of answers and a way to attribute them to the students who submitted them.

Solution: The documented approach combines a client-server architecture with Git-based answer storage and digital signatures. The 2017 paper discusses GitLab as a possible storage backend.

Who Benefits

Primary

  • Students
    • Taking digital examinations on their own devices

Secondary

  • Instructors and examination organizers
    • Traceable storage and attribution of examination answers

Requirements

Tools & Systems

  • Examination clients on students' devices
  • Server services and Git-based answer storage

Getting Started

The linked publications document research prototypes from 2017 to 2021. They do not establish that a supported installation or hosted service is available today. Before adoption, clarify software availability and operating requirements.

  1. Read the dissertation for the FLEX architecture and evaluation. Section 1.6 describes development at the RWTH IT Center in the MATSE context, which includes a degree course at FH Aachen.
  2. Read the EUNIS paper for the Git-based storage approach and GitLab integration option.
