Summary

Projects and groups on git.nrw are not removed immediately when you delete them. Instead, they are placed in an inactive state for 14 days, during which Owners can restore them at any time.

Delete a project or group

Deletion requires at least the Owner role in the respective project or group.

  1. In the left sidebar, select Settings > General.
  2. Expand the Advanced section.
  3. Scroll down and select Delete project or Delete group.

What happens after deletion

After you initiate deletion, projects and groups are not deleted immediately. Instead, they are placed in an inactive state for 14 days:

  • All Owners are notified by email.
  • The project or group is no longer accessible to regular members or via search.
  • URLs and paths remain reserved during this period and cannot be reassigned immediately.
  • After the 14-day period expires, the system permanently and irrevocably deletes all repositories, issues, pipelines, and metadata. If necessary, Owners can manually skip this retention period.

Restore a project or group

Within the 14-day retention period, users with the Owner role can restore the project or group themselves:

  1. Select Settings > General.
  2. Expand the Advanced section.
  3. Scroll down and select Restore project or Restore group.
